FREMONT, Mich. (WOOD) — There was an officer-involved shooting in Fremont, police say.

It happened around 5:20 p.m. Tuesday, when a Fremont Police Department officer was responding to a domestic incident, Michigan State Police said in a release. It said after arriving at a home, the officer heard what sounded like gunshots inside.

Police established a perimeter for safety and evacuated neighbors, officials say.

The suspect went outside while holding what looked like two guns and a Newaygo County Sheriff’s Department sergeant confronted the suspect, MSP says. It says the suspect appeared to level their firearm at the sergeant, who then fired their gun.

The sergeant and suspect were not hit, officials say.

The suspect was arrested.

Officials say it appears to be an isolated domestic incident and there is not a threat to the public.

MSP is investigating the incident at the request of the sheriff’s department. The sergeant has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
