NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WOOD) — A Mona Shores High School student is in serious condition after being hit by a vehicle while walking home from school.

The crash happened around 3 p.m. Wednesday on Seminole Road west of Henry Street, near the school’s athletic fields.

Norton Shores Police Chief Jon Gale says the 16-year-old boy was walking across the roadway when he stepped into the path of a Ford Escape, which couldn’t avoid hitting him. Gale says the teen was taken to Mercy Health Partners Hackley Campus in serious condition.

Gale says vehicles were stopped to turn left when the student started crossing. The driver said she didn’t see the teen because of all the cars stopped in the adjacent turn lane. Gale suspects the boy may have thought all traffic was stopped when he made his way across.

The crash shut down the roadway for hours.
