NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WOOD) — Look out, lakeshore drivers: The sizzling temperatures are leading to another traffic headache on US-31 in Muskegon County.
Norton Shores police say the intense heat has created a second heave in the highway. Authorities are shutting down one of the northbound lanes between Sternberg and Hile roads to repair it. Michigan Department of Transportation spokesman John Richard expects the closure to remain in place until 3 p.m. Thursday.

Wednesday morning, workers fixed another section of northbound US-31 because of a separate pavement heave. The shifted slab led to a bump in the northbound lanes, just north of Sherman Avenue in Muskegon.
Richard believes the quick turnaround from a long, cold winter to an unusually hot May is to blame for the heaving. He’s asking drivers to watch out for bumps and use caution when traveling.
