Crash causes closure, outage in Norton Shores

NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WOOD) — A stretch of Sherman Boulevard in Norton Shores was expected to remain shut down for hours Wednesday night after a crash.

Norton Shores police say an SUV hit a utility pole in front of the Great Lakes Fresh Market around 6:20. The driver, a 49-year-old Norton Shores man, wasn't hurt.

Norton Shores police said the driver was going too fast for conditions before the crash. He was ticketed.

The crash brought down wires down across the street. Hazmat, Consumers Energy and Comcast crews were called in and Sherman was shut down between Estes Street and Wickham Drive.

There was a power outage in the area. Consumers' interactive outage map showed there were about 320 customers without power as of 9:30 p.m., down nearly 500 from an hour prior.

Power should be back to everyone by 1 a.m. Thursday.
