MSP: Kids were not in car seats in Van Buren Co. crash

BLOOMINGDALE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Two young children and a woman were injured in a Van Buren County crash Tuesday night.

The crash happened around 9:45 p.m. on County Road 665 near 18th Avenue in Bloomingdale Township. Michigan State Police say 26-year-old Brandy Chandler, from Bloomingdale, was driving when she lost control of the vehicle, went off the road and the vehicle overturned.

Chandler was seriously injured in the crash and taken by ambulance to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.

Her 3-year-old son was ejected from the vehicle and flown to the hospital where he is in critical condition, according to police. He is expected to survive, MSP told 24 Hour News 8 Wednesday afternoon.

Chandler’s 5-year-old daughter also suffered a minor injury and was hospitalized.

Police say neither child was in a car seat at the time of the crash.

The crash is unusual in that it happened on a straight stretch of road, MSP said. Investigators are looking into whether distracted driving could have been the cause.

They said they have not yet been able to interview Chandler because of her condition and have not yet obtained a search warrant for her cellphone.
