Soldier surprises son, 8, at little league game

CRYSTAL TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A little league baseball game Tuesday turned into a heartwarming surprise for a local slugger.

As 8-year-old Hunter walked up to bat, the umpire wished him luck with a familiar voice. It was his dad, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Joseph Abbott, who has been in Germany for about five months.

Abbott and his fiancée had been trying to think of a way to surprise their kids with his return and the game in the community of Crystal proved to be the perfect opportunity.

“I flew in, drove home, took a shower and came here to surprise my son. It seems like it worked,” Abbott said as he hugged Hunter.

Abbott, who has been in the army for eight years, will so deploy to the Middle East for a year.
