Missing man found dead in Norton Shores pond

NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WOOD) — Norton Shores police say a man fell in to a pond while doing yard work Tuesday and drowned.

He was identified Thursday as 61-year-old Thomas Bultema.

A leaf blower was also found in the pond behind Bultema’s home in the 5500 block of Henry Street. The Norton Shores Police Department says investigators believe he was home alone blowing leaves when he fell into the pond and drowned between 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Bultema’s relatives called police just before 7:30 p.m. after they couldn’t find him. Norton Shores police and Michigan State Police K-9 units searched the area but couldn’t find him overnight. An MSP helicopter joined the effort when the search resumed Wednesday morning.

Officers eventually found an article of clothing floating in the pond and the Norton Shores Dive Team then discovered Bultema’s body in the water.
