LINCOLN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan State Police have identified a Newaygo County woman who was killed after a boat she was riding in flipped off its trailer.
Megan Gilmore, 30, died at the scene of the crash, which happened around 10:43 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of West Foss Avenue and North Centerline Road in Lincoln Township in Newaygo County.
Relatives of the White Cloud area woman say the crash involved four people and happened as they were heading home from Diamond Lake. Megan Gilmore and her cousin Travis Gilmore were sitting in the pontoon boat when the vehicle hauling it took a sharp turn in the road.
Megan Gilmore’s mother said a friend with them told her they asked the driver to slow down before the crash, but he sped up instead. Authorities have said they’re investigating if speed was a factor in the crash.
Travis Gilmore was flown to a Grand Rapids hospital with bleeding on the brain and fractures, according to relatives. He has since been released from the hospital.
Megan Gilmore’s family says the driver, Joshua Mills, was her ex-boyfriend. He’s charged with driving while under the influence, causing death.
It’s unclear why Megan and Travis Gilmore were in the boat instead of the vehicle; relatives say there are conflicting stories.
