GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — West Michigan mailboxes will be empty Wednesday.
In a rare move, the U.S. Postal Service announced Tuesday night that it was canceling all deliveries for zip codes beginning with480 through 492 and 493 through 499.
That’s all of West Michigan except some far southwestern areas, as well as Detroit.
Mail will still be delivered in Jackson and Flint.
The closure is due to the subzero temperatures expected to freeze the state. USPS said it wanted to protect letter carriers’ safety.
Deliveries have also been canceled in parts of Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, the Dakotas and Nebraska.
