BRIGHTON, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan pastor has apologized to a woman who says she was shamed for breastfeeding inside a church in a Detroit suburb.

The Livingston Daily Press & Argus reports that 29-year-old Amy Marchant says a church leader privately messaged her on Facebook after she nursed her child at The Naz Church in Brighton two months ago. Marchant says she was accused of immodesty and inspiring “lustfulness.”

Lead Pastor Ben Walls Sr. says the church supports and encourages breastfeeding. The pastor has apologized for embarrassment or hurt caused when Marchant was asked to cover or use one of the rooms designated for “those who want a private space.”

Marchant says she was shocked that shaming occurs in a place she’s “supposed to feel safe.” She says she doesn’t plan to return to the church.
