GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital is expanding east.
On Wednesday, Grand Rapids-based Mary Free Bed announced plans for a nearly $41 million rehabilitation hospital in Saginaw.
The 48-bed facility will expand Mary Free Bed’s partnership with Saginaw’s Covenant HealthCare.
“Mary Free Bed and Covenant HealthCare formed a joint operating agreement back in early 2018, and part of that process was evaluating the opportunity to build a new rehabilitation hospital,” Bruce Brasser, vice president of network operations for Mary Free Bed, explained.
It will be built on Covenant’s Saginaw campus.
“Their current facility is located off campus, about a mile away, and it limits the accessibility of specialty physicians,” Brasser said. “So we thought that building on their campus would provide a great opportunity for us to grow and provide better care.”
Mary Free Bed has a joint venture with Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital at an existing facility, but the Saginaw project will be the first new hospital Mary Free Bed has built outside of Grand Rapids. It may not be the last.
“We’ve seen excellent patient satisfaction, clinical outcomes improving over time,” Brasser said. “And that’s a powerful message for other hospitals that have come to us and asked what the potential may be moving forward. So we do believe Mary Free Bed will continue to grow.”
Groundbreaking for the Saginaw hospital is set for late this year or the first part of 2020.
