LANSING, Mich. (WOOD/AP) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s budget plan includes hiking Michigan’s gas tax by 45 cents a gallon.
The governor’s spokesperson confirmed the gas tax proposal Monday, saying it would generate as much as $2 billion in additional revenue.
Whitmer spokeswoman Tiffany Brown and another source confirmed the plan is gradually raise the tax on gasoline and diesel fuel over a year. The initial increase would be 15 cents in October, with another 15-cent hike six months later and the final 15-cent increase in October 2020.
Brown says Whitmer will also propose “protections to help offset the cost to people’s pocketbooks.” However, gasbuddy.com petroleum analyst Patrick DeHaan says once fully implemented, the gas tax hike would cost the average Michigan Driver $270 more a year per vehicle.

Former legislative leaders have called for a 47-cent gasoline tax hike phased in over nine years, as a way to repair Michigan’s roads.
New Michigan GOP Chairman and former Rep. Laura Cox immediately responded to the news with the following statement:
“Governor Whitmer promised that she would ‘fix the damn roads’ instead she is proposing a $2 billion tax increase that will break many Michiganders budgets. This comes just 4 years after Michiganders rejected a similar proposal by an 80/20 vote. The people of Michigan deserve real solutions on this critical issue, not a tax and spend solution which places the burden on the states overtaxed families.”
Whitmer is expected to formally introduce her gas tax proposal Tuesday when she delivers her budget proposal for 2019-2020. The plan is also expected to include a $507 million increase in K-12 classroom spending.
