GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — Memorial Day weekend is almost here, and some may be boating on the water. It’s usually the busiest time of year for marinas.

24 Hour News 8 spoke with Tom McMahon with Skipper Bud’s Grand Haven about how crowded the water is expected to be this upcoming holiday weekend. Of course, it is all weather dependent.

McMahon said if the weather is nice, Michigan boaters are expected to be out in high numbers.

As for fuel prices, McMahon said they haven’t changed much from last season. Current fuel prices in Grand Haven are $4.25 for gas and $3.47 for diesel.

Although, prices vary from marina to marina. They’re usually around .10 to .30 cents higher in the northern area like Bay Harbor.

McMahon gave some advice for people who plan on launching their boats at local boat ramps Memorial Day weekend. He said water levels are high out there, a lot of the docks are currently underwater. Also, all the rain we’ve been having has brought a lot of stuff floating in the water.

As for boat sales, McMahon said they’re “very strong this year,” at least at Skipper Bud’s. They are having an issue keeping large boats in inventory.

McMahon said, if someone is looking for a new boat, they should get their order in now. Skipper Bud’s Grand Haven is on its way of doubling sales from last year.
