Meijer says it’s first retailer to ditch plus-size department

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Body image issues impact women and girls of all ages from the very youngest children to their mothers and grandmothers. A retailer is taking a step to cut through the body image filters impacting women in a subtle way that you might not even notice.

West Michigan-based Meijer believes they are the first of its type store to make this clothing integration move. By early next year, you will notice all women’s clothing from size small to size 3X on the same rack.

“When you’re shopping with your friends you don’t want to say ‘OK, you guys can go put on these clothes, I got to go over here.’ It’s time to make a change,” said Meijer’s Senior Manager of Communications Jennifer Rook.

Meijer cut out the plus-size department and put those pieces of clothing on the same rack as the rest of the sizes. That change came in June 2016 in a few Meijer stores, including the location on Plainfield Avenue.

It was a change Cheresha Taylor noticed right away while shopping with her friends.

“These are so cute. I’m going to go over to the plus size and see if they have my size. She was like wait a minute. What size are you looking for, they’re all right here,” said Taylor.

Along with the size integration comes a price integration; plus-sizes will no longer cost more. All sizes are the same price.

“Now a days it’s so hard. These young women trying to fit in and feeling different about plus size and petite pretty much putting a label on us,” said Taylor.

Rook says the feedback from their test stores have been positive. Empowering women to be proud of who they are — no matter the size.

“Why not keep everyone together because everybody’s size should be celebrated,” said Rook.

“We all come in here and we’re all shopping in the same area. We’re all women, we all want to look beautiful,” said Taylor.
