KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The man killed in a shooting in Kalamazoo early Tuesday was remembered as a “well-mannered, sweet gentleman” by a woman who took him in.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety identified the victim as 31-year-old Gabriel Juarez-Montanez of Kalamazoo.
The shooting happened shortly after 2 a.m. in the 1300 block of Portage Street north of E. Stockbridge Avenue, between Edison House Apartments and Howard’s Party Store. KDPS says responding officers found Juarez-Montanez in the parking lot behind Edison House Apartments with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Bronson Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
“It’s sad to hear that something like that happened to him, because he was a sweet person, very sweet person,” Mary Branson said.
She said she gave Juarez-Montanez a place to stay when he had nowhere else to go.
“He came to me when he didn’t have a place to stay,” Branson, who operates an adult day care program, said. “He walked up to us and said he didn’t have a place to stay and that he needed somewhere warm, so I took him in.”
Lafayette Neily, who lives in the Edison House Apartment, said he’s afraid to go out at night.
“It’s dangerous out here, you know, just dangerous,” he said. “No one should be out here roaming around at night.”
Details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation and no arrests have been made. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing one or two suspects fleeing on foot, police said.
