KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A man was killed and a woman injured in a shooting in Kalamazoo’s Northside neighborhood on Monday evening.
The shooting happened around 6:20 p.m. in the 900 block of North Church Street, south of Paterson Street, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.
Police said they were first called there on a report of a fight and shots fired. When they arrived, they found the man and woman with gunshot wounds.
KDPS says officers performed CPR on 22-year-old Bernard Andrew Kye and he was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
A 40-year-old was shot in the leg and was in stable condition at the hospital on Monday night. She is expected to be OK.
KDPS Chief Jeff Hadley said the shooting may have stemmed from some sort of dispute earlier in the day or on Sunday.
A woman identifying herself as the male victim’s second cousin told 24 Hour News 8 her family recently moved from Chicago and have only been on the block for about six months. She said people on the block were bullying her little brothers repeatedly and this time, they showed up with a gun.
The man who was shot is not from Chicago. He lives in Kalamazoo and was visiting his family members when the shooting happened, the second cousin said.
Monday night, police said they were questioning two people believed to be involved, but that the investigation was ongoing.
