KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) —  Almost a year to the day a Kalamazoo man was murdered, a suspect is in custody.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says Johnnie Williams-Hopkins of Portage was formally charged Thursday with open murder in the April 7, 2018 death of Terrance Jaleel Swinney.

The shooting happened around 4 a.m. during an apartment party in the 900 block of North Burdick Street, between Parsons and E. Frank Street. Swinney, 26, was rushed to Bronson Methodist Hospital where he died.

It’s unclear if Swinney knew Williams-Hopkins.

Williams-Hopkins, 29, is also charged with using a firearm to commit a felony in connection to the case.
