GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A mall massage therapist who was charged after sexually assaulting a client entered into a plea deal on the day his trial was scheduled to begin.
Monday, John Ashby pleaded no contest to third-degree criminal sexual conduct.
Under the terms of a plea deal, Kent County prosecutors agreed not to file any additional charges against him as a result of the investigation into him.
The deal also capped Ashby’s sentenced at one year in jail or prison — though the court may choose to ignore that part of the deal. Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 29.
Ashby had previously rejected a plea deal; however, he accepted it on the day he was set to stand trial.
Ashby was working at Massage Green Spa, located inside the CenterPoint mall on 28th Street in Grand Rapids, when he used force or coercion to engage in sexual penetration, according to court documents.
Another man who was a massage therapist at Massage Green Spa, Lance Martinez, also pleaded no contest last month to fourth-degree CSC for inappropriately touching a client. He was sentenced to three months in jail.
The spa has since closed.
