KENTWOOD, Mich. (WOOD) — An East Kentwood High School student is getting national buzz after she recreated her kindergarten photo for her ID badge during her senior year.
Tyra Hunt wanted to show off her transformation in her senior photo, so she styled her hair in pigtails, dressed in a neon green shirt and donned a somewhat anxious facial expression to match the old picture.
“We are allowed to do funny ID pictures because they put our senior pictures in the yearbook,” Hunt said. “I didn’t know what to do because we are not allowed to use props, like hold anything, so I was like, what should I do? And I found a green sweatshirt and then we ironed on USA to it and we were like, ‘This is going to be perfect.'”
She tweeted out the side-by-side comparison Tuesday afternoon. It soon went viral, getting picked up by BuzzFeed, New York Magazine and Teen Vogue, among other agencies.
“My friend told me to post it on Twitter and I had no idea it was going to blow up. I literally had no idea. I was like, ‘I guess we’ll try.’ She was like, ‘Maybe we’ll get like 20 retweets, maybe a couple favorites, it will go all over EK.’ I was like, ‘OK,'” Hunt said. “Then within like two hours, I had 300 retweets. It was crazy. Overnight, like 50,000 favorites.”
The kindergarten photo, she said, is something of a family joke. It sits in a frame on the mantle in her family room.
“My mom was surprised that I could get the face and the hair positioning perfectly,” she said.
