LaughFest kicks off; no world record broken

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — LaughFest fell short of reclaiming a world record at the festival’s kickoff Thursday night.

Organizers had hoped to take back the Guinness World Record for the “largest rubber chicken toss” but not even people showed up.

Gilda’s LaughFest originally set the record back in 2011, during the first year of LaughFest, with a total of 925 rubber chickens tossed. However in that same year, the record was broken again by Glad Tidings Pentecostal Church in Ontario, Canada, who tossed 999 rubber chickens.

Unfortunately, only 738 rubber chickens were tossed at Calder Plaza in downtown Grand Rapids Thursday — falling short of the current world record.

LaughFest had broken four consecutive Guinness World Records. In 2014, 1,675 people set the record for the most people wearing sunglasses in the dark.

Seth Meyers, Kathy Griffin and Marlon Wayans are among some of the headlining acts for Laughfest 2016 which runs from March 10-20.

Proceeds from LaughFest will go to support the free cancer, grief, and emotional health programs offered through Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids.

LaughFest Central, located inside the Grand Rapids Art Museum for the duration of the festival, has merchandise available for purchase as well as a guide to all the LaughFest shows.
