Kalamazoo and Battle Creek

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The Western Michigan University student-athlete has been formally charged with murder in the death of another student.

Joeviair Kennedy, 20, was arraigned Monday on one count of murder, one count of armed robbery and two counts of felony firearms. He was denied bond.

The charges are linked to the death of 19-year-old Jacob Jones, who was shot and killed Thursday night at an apartment building on S. Howard Street, west of campus. The police chief told 24 Hour News 8 they believe Jones was selling a small amount of marijuana at the time of the shooting.

Kennedy is a WMU basketball player. Friday, the college’s Division of Intercollegiate Athletics said he has been suspended.
