KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A dead bird carrying the West Nile virus was recently discovered in Kalamazoo County.

The discovery puts Kalamazoo County alongside Kent, Ottawa and Van Buren on the list of West Michigan counties where West Nile has been found in animals.

There have so far not been any human cases of West Nile in West Michigan.

But Kent County health officials say they have seen a nearly six-fold uptick from last year in the number of mosquitoes carrying the virus, and they’re warning people to take precautions to avoid getting bitten.

The virus doesn’t cause problems for most people, but in rare cases, it can cause paralysis or even death. In the last 15 years, it has killed seven people in Kent County.
