GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Battle Creek-area couple walking along a beach in Florida was surprised to find a large cross float ashore.

Greg Gay and his wife were vacationing in Fort Lauderdale this week when they spotted the cross.

“The cross is 20 foot tall and made out of 10 inch-by-10 inch timber. It’s huge,” Gay told 24 Hour News 8 over the phone Wednesday afternoon. “It was unbelievable to us that it made it across the ocean like that. Full of barnacles, so it had been in the water for a long time. And it was just coming into shore as we were walking up. It was like timing was everything. If it had been 10 minutes earlier or 10 minutes later, it wouldn’t have happened like that, so it has meaning for sure.”

He said he has been contacted by several local TV affiliates, as well as big outlets like Newsweek, USA Today and Fox News, to talk about the find.

What he still doesn’t know — and what no one else seems to know, either — is where the cross came from.

For now, a local bar owner is keeping it in the backyard so people can stop by and see it.
