Shooting in Springfield prompts nearby schools to close

Kalamazoo and Battle Creek

SPRINGFIELD, Mich. (WOOD) — An early morning shooting in Springfield prompted schools in the area to close Thursday.

Endeavor Charter Academy, Springfield Middle School and Valley View Elementary School in Springfield were closed Thursday due to the shooting. The three school are located near the intersection of Avenue A and Helmer Road in Springfield.

Calhoun County sheriff’s deputies told 24 Hour News 8 that a woman was driving on Avenue A near Sundown Street in Springfield around 4:30 a.m. Thursday when she swerved to avoid hitting a man who was in the street.

The man then moved to curb and fired multiple rounds at the vehicle.

The woman was shot in the hip. She drove herself to the BP gas station on Dickman Road. She was hospitalized, but her injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Authorities believe the shooter was armed with a semi-automatic pistol. Anyone with information is asked to call Calhoun County sheriff’s detectives at 269.781.0880 or Silent Observer at 269.781.9700.

There is no reason to believe the public is any danger. It’s believed to be an isolated incident, not an active shooter situation, according to a Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office news release.
