KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Several schools in Kalamazoo are closed Monday after a power outage left more than 10,000 Consumers Energy customers without power Sunday.

The outages were in southeast Kalamazoo, as well as Portage and Pavilion Township.

Kalamazoo Public Schools closed Milwood Elementary, Milwood Middle and Greenwood Elementary schools Monday due to the power outage.

Consumers initially estimated that power would be back by 7:30 p.m. Sunday, but later pushed that back to 9:45 p.m. Some customers did get power back before 10 p.m., but some 3,100 were without service Monday morning. Most affected customers had services restored before 6:20 a.m. Monday.

A Consumers spokesperson said the outage is affecting a substation. Crews had to fix that before they could address the rest of the system.

It’s not clear what caused the outages.
