EMMETT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — State police have identified the semi-truck driver who was killed in fiery crash on I-94 near Battle Creek early Thursday morning.

Peter Monroe, 48, of Mendon, Mich. was killed in the crash that happened around 1 a.m. Thursday on westbound I-94 near 11 Mile Road in Emmett Township.

Michigan State Police said that a semi-truck, driven by a 40-year-old Bellville man, was merging onto westbound I-94 from 11 Mile Road when he was rear ended by the semi-truck driven by Monroe.

At least one of the trucks caught fire, Calhoun County dispatchers said.

Monroe was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The Bellville man was not injured in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation, but troopers believe speed is a factor.
