KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities are investigating an early morning house fire in Kalamazoo that left one person dead.

At approximately 2:15 a.m. Sunday, public saftey officers responded to a fire in the 400 block of Wallace Avenue north of East Michigan Avenue.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said the home was unsafe for firefighters to enter because of heavy smoke and fire conditions, so they put it out from the outside.

Efforts were made to find the person inside, but heavy hoarding conditions and a collasped roof made the task difficult.

As of Sunday afternoon, authorities hadn’t identified the person killed. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.

It is unclear what started the fire, which was under investigation by the Kalamazoo fire marshal.

Anyone who may have information regarding this investigation is encouraged to call Kalamazoo Public Safety at 269.488.8911 or Silent Observer at 269.343.2100.
