ALAMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Michigan State Police say a driver who died in a US-131 crash that also seriously injured a 9-year-old boy was twice over the legal limit for alcohol.
Troopers say 29-year-old Derick Allen Smith died hours after the Sunday afternoon crash at Bronson Methodist Hospital. The boy who was riding in the front seat of his vehicle remains in the hospital with a severe concussion, according to a Monday morning news release.
Witnesses said the Union City man was speeding, swerving in and out of traffic and passing vehicles on both shoulders of the highway when he hit loose gravel and lost control around 1:45 p.m. Sunday.
Smith’s vehicle went into the ditch and rolled over multiple times near the exit for D Avenue in Alamo Township, northwest of Kalamazoo. Troopers say Smith was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from his vehicle.
Passersby stopped and helped free the boy, who was trapped in the wreckage. Police say he was wearing a seatbelt.
State police say Smith’s preliminary blood alcohol content showed he was twice over the legal limit at the time of the crash.
Authorities are withholding the boy’s name.
