COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities are identifying a Kalamazoo man who was hit by a truck while walking with his wife near a Comstock Township Walgreens.

Jerome Joseph Kohel, 74, was still listed in critical condition Monday, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators say he was at the intersection of Gull Road and Gull Run Drive when he was hit and run over around 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

An off-duty medical worker and several witnesses helped Kohel until first responders arrived and took him to Borgess Hospital. The driver, 27-year-old Michael Andrew Schultz of Kalamazoo, was not injured.

It’s unclear what led up to the crash, but authorities say alcohol was not a factor.

The crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information in this case is asked to call the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office at 269.383.8748 or Silent Observer at 269.343.2100.
