KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities have identified the man who was killed in a house fire in Kalamazoo that has been deemed suspicious.

Zachariah John Hayes, 31, was killed in the fire at a home in the 400 block of Wallace Avenue, north of East Michigan Avenue, which public safety officers responded to around 2:15 a.m. Sunday.

Hayes, who was originally from the Iron Mountain area in the Upper Peninsula, had moved to the Kalamazoo area several years ago to help his family with maintenance on their rental properties, a release from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said.

Authorities did not indicate why they are now investigating the fire as suspicious in nature.

When officers responded to the fire on Sunday, they quickly learned one person was still possibly inside the home, authorities said. However, due to heavy hoarding issues and a collapsed roof, public safety officers had to fight the fire defensively.
