KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Police say they arrested the person who broke into two Kalamazoo homes and stole a car Tuesday afternoon.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says the situation started around 2:15 p.m. when a woman came home to the 2300 block of Crest Drive, in the area of Parkview Avenue and Oakland Drive, to find a stranger inside. The invader ran off. The homeowner called police.
Officers looking for the invader spotted someone matching the suspect description nearby. That person ran off when they approached.
Police say the suspect then broke into a home on Amherst Avenue, less than a mile away from the first break-in. The suspect grabbed a set of keys and stole the car from the driveway. Officers still in the neighborhood saw the suspect driving recklessly and the owner of the car flagged down one of them to report what happened.
Authorities determined the car thief was also the suspect in the initial home invasion. They also found evidence that allowed them to identify the suspect.
KDPS says the suspect committed more crimes outside Kalamazoo. Eventually, the suspect was arrested by officers from the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police.
That person’s name was not included in a Tuesday evening release, nor did KDPS list exactly what charges would be filed.
