Fake sale ends in armed robbery, shots fired; suspect sought

OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities are searching for a suspect who lured victims into a robbery under the guise of a sale posted on social media.

The robbery happened shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot of the Best Western at the intersection of 11th Street and Stadium Drive in Oshtemo Township, near Kalamazoo.

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office said the victims went to the parking lot to buy a gaming system that had been advertised on social media. After receiving money from the victims, the suspect pulled out a handgun and left the scene.

The victims followed the suspect to Crystal Lane near the Evergreen South Apartment Complex along 11th Street north of Parkview Avenue. The suspect then fire a shot at the victims, hitting their vehicle.

The victims were not hurt. 

The suspect was described as a light-skin black man in his 20s. He is around 5-foot-10 and around 160 pounds with a thin build and short curly hair. He was last seen wearing a black hoodie, grey sweatpants and black shoes.

A similar robbery happened Wednesday at the Evergreen South Apartment Complex. The victim went there to buy a cellphone that had been advertised on social media.

“We believe both crimes are related to the same suspect,” Undersheriff James VanDyken told 24 Hour News 8.
