PORTAGE, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities are searching for the driver who crashed into a fire hydrant after fleeing police during a traffic stop.

The Portage Department of Public Safety said an officer stopped a 2014 Mazda for a traffic violation around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday on Milham Avenue near Constitution Boulevard. When the officer walked to the car, police say the driver took off eastbound on Milham.

A few minutes later, the vehicle was found at the intersection of Milham and Ohio avenues with no one inside. Police say it appears the driver lost control when turning northbound, hitting a fire hydrant.

The incident remains under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Portage Department of Public Safety at 269.329.4567 or Silent Observer at 269.343.2100.
