KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A power outage forced three schools to close and Western Michigan University to delay classes Tuesday.

Due to the outage, Kalamazoo Public School closed Northglade Elementary, King-Westwood Elementary and Hillside Middle School Tuesday. Western Michigan University postponed classes on its main campus until 10 a.m. Tuesday.

The outage, which affected 7,698 customers in Kalamazoo and Kalamazoo Township, was first reported shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday. Power was restored several hours later around 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Consumers Energy told 24 Hour News 8 that the cause of outage was likely due to strong winds that broke a power pole in the Kalamazoo area. It’s unclear exactly where the broken pole is located.
