BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — Battle Creek police officers are investigating the death of a man whose body was found inside a burning home on New Year’s Day.

Emergency responders were called to a fire in the 200 block of Graves Street south of Parkway Drive in Battle Creek around 12:47 a.m. Tuesday. After putting out the fire, they discovered the man’s body, according to the Battle Creek Police Department.

Authorities say they are treating the case as a possible homicide.

Officers will not release further information about the victim until family members are notified.

Fire crews say the blaze started on the home’s first floor, which contains the kitchen, living and dining areas. It’s unclear what sparked the fire.

While the Battle Creek Fire Department has cleared the scene, police and the fire marshal were still on site shortly before 7a.m.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch at 269.781.0911.
