BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — A 29-year-old Battle Creek man has been charged with murder in the death of his 8-month-old son.
Kyle Kregling was arraigned Friday on a count of murder and first-degree child abuse.
Police were called Monday to a report of an unresponsive infant, later identified as Kregling’s son Chris, on W. Territorial Road near Foster Avenue. Chris was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, where he was listed in critical condition.
Kregling told officers Chris fell out of bed, but the Battle Creek Police Department said responding officers didn’t believe the baby’s injuries were consistent with an accidental fall.
When detectives interviewed Kregling for more information, he changed his version of events, police say. Police say they determined the child’s injuries were likely caused by physical abuse.
Kregling was charged Wednesday with child abuse. Chris died shortly after that court proceeding.
An autopsy ruled the death a homicide and authorities issued the new murder charge.
When Kregling was arraigned again Friday, bond was denied. He expected back in court Nov. 18 for a probable cause hearing.
