BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities are investigating a Battle Creek house fire that burned one person.
More than a dozen firefighters were called to the home in the 100 block of Lacey Avenue around 11:11 a.m. Thursday. When crews arrived, smoke was coming from the back of the home and everyone inside was standing in the front of the property.
Firefighters discovered a small pile of clothing or rags on fire in the basement; they squelched the flames with an extinguisher and aired out the home.
The homeowner’s son, Nick Shaneck, was taken to the hospital with burns and is expected to survive.
Investigators say the fire caused an estimated $12,000 in damages. The Battle Creek fire marshal is looking into the case.
