Wrong-way driver hits police car; 2 officers injured

Kent County

WYOMING, Mich. (WOOD) — A wrong-way driver smashed into a police cruiser head-on early Friday morning before being arrested.

The vehicle was first spotted by a police officer shortly before 2 a.m. going south in the northbound lanes of US-131 in the city of Grand Rapids.

An MDOT camera at US-131 and 54th Street captured video of a Wyoming Police officer attempting to block the lanes to stop the wrong-way driver. Instead, the vehicle smashed into the cruiser – sending sparks flying.

The driver was able to continue south after the crash. Dispatchers said that person was arrested a short time later on US-131.

The Wyoming Department of Public Safety said two officers taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injures then later released.

Northbound US-131 was shut down for about 90 minutes from M-6 to 54th Street while police investigated. The highway has since been reopened.

The incident remains under investigation, but investigators believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, according to a WDPS news release.
