WALKER, Mich. (WOOD) — Many drivers are ready for the complete closure of eastbound I-96 from Alpine to Plainfield avenues in Walker to be over.
Morning commutes have been much slower for drivers along southbound US-131 and eastbound I-196 between US-131 and I-96 due to the added traffic.
Good news, the construction is almost done.
Eastbound I-96 is scheduled to open by 10 p.m. Monday, July 2, according to MDOT’s website. This is tentative and could change as it has before.
Once eastbound is open, MDOT will then close westbound to do the same work.
As of now, the total closure of westbound I-96 at Plainfield is scheduled to begin 12 a.m. Thursday, July 5. It’s scheduled to be closed through the end of August.
The detour for the closure of westbound I-96 will be for drivers to take westbound I-196 to northbound US-131.
