Speed a factor in deadly Kent Co. crash

Kent County

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say a man was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Kent County late Friday night.

It happened around 11:16 p.m. on West River Drive NE near Samrick Avenue NE west of Jupiter Avenue NE in Plainfield Township.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Department says the man was driving westbound on West River Drive at high speeds when his vehicle crossed over the eastbound lanes, crashed through the guard rail and struck the cement wall of the White Pine Trail bridge over West River Drive.

Authorities say the driver, 36-year-old Chadwick Kogelschatz of Rockford, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Kent County news release.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol played a role in this crash.

Kogelschatz may not have been wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Deputies believe speed was a factor, the release said.

The crash remains under investigation.
