CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A 76-year-old bicyclist was killed after colliding with a car near Grand Rapids Friday.

It happened around noon on Spaulding Avenue near Watermark Drive, north of Burton Street SE, in Cascade Township.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Department said the bicyclist was hit by a car driven by a 74-year-old Belmont woman. Deputies said their preliminary investigation showed the bicyclist turned in front of the car.

The bicyclist died at the scene. On Monday, he was identified as Clarence Hogeterp, a 76-year-old man from Grand Rapids.

Hogeterp owned Redux Books, a Facebook post from the shop in Grand Rapids’ Eastown neighborhood said. Redux said Hogeterp was biking with a friend when the crash happened.

“Our hearts are broken,” the post read in part.

The shop said it was closing temporarily because of the death. Memorial services were pending.
