Police nab suspect in Woodland Mall theft

Kent County

KENTWOOD, Mich. (WOOD) — After more than an hour of searching, police captured a suspect believed to have been stealing from the Woodland Mall in Kentwood.

Kent County dispatchers said security guards spotted the man stealing over the security cameras around 7:20 a.m., before the mall opened for business. It was, however, open to mall walkers.

The man took off running headed northwest of the mall. Officers from Kentwood, East Grand Rapids and Grand Rapids, as well as county sheriff’s deputies and two police K-9s, responded to the Ridgemoor area, where the man was ultimately taken into custody more than an hour later.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Department said the original report indicated the thief was taking jackets from a display.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was lodged in the Kent County jail. The Kent County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case for charges.
