Pastor’s shooting death in Byron Twp. ‘suspicious’

BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The Kent County Sheriff’s Department says the shooting death of a pastor near Byron Center is suspicious.

Authorities are not releasing the pastor’s name, but said he is a 66-year-old from Byron Center. The current pastor at Abundant Life Church in Byron Center identified him as Dale Cross Sr. Cross used to be the pastor at that church and remained a congregation member.

His body was found just before 6 p.m. Monday in the 1400 block of 68th Street SW between Burlingame and Clyde Park avenues in Byron Township. The sheriff’s department said someone called 911 to report they had found a gunshot victim lying alongside the road next to his GMC Envoy. The caller said the SUV had a tire jack under it and it looked like the man had been working on it.

Undersheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young told 24 Hour News 8 the death was originally ruled a suicide, but is now being investigated as a suspicious death.

Authorities are asking that anyone who may have seen the pastor, described as a white man with a medium or heavy build and wearing teal gym shorts and a gray T-shirt, walking near or working on his SUV along 68th to call them. An autopsy was conducted Tuesday, but its results have not yet been released.
