PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities say a 14-year-old passenger was killed in a crash on US-131 north of Grand Rapids Wednesday.
It happened shortly after 7 p.m. along the northbound lanes near the exit to West River Drive in Plainfield Township.
Michigan State Police said the preliminary investigation shows a northbound vehicle rear ended a Honda Odyssey van. The impact caused the van to hit a Ford Escape in front of it. The van then went off the roadway, hitting a large freeway sign.
A 14-year-old passenger inside the van was pronounced dead on the scene, according to a MSP news release. Staff members at the school he would have attended this year confirmed his name as Andy Larson.
A source told 24 Hour News 8 Wednesday that seven other people were hospitalized following the crash. The people were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, the release said.
Authorities are focusing their investigation on a potentially distracted driver. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor.
