Mom charged in Kent Co. shaken baby case

SPARTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. WOOD) — A woman is facing child abuse charges after her 3-month-old displayed signs of shaken baby syndrome.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids on Thursday on a report of the injured baby, according to a release from the Kent County Sheriff’s Department. While the baby had serious injuries, they were not considered to be life-threatening.

The alleged abuse happened in the 1400 block of Glen Park Dr. NW in Sparta Township, sheriff’s authorities said.

On Friday, the baby’s mother, whose name will not be released until her arraignment, was charged with first-degree child abuse and third-degree child abuse.

The woman is being held at the Kent County jail on a $250,000 bond. Her arraignment is scheduled for Monday.
