LOWELL, Mich. (WOOD) — Officials say a dog park in Lowell is closed until further notice after the park’s fence was damaged when a car crashed into a pond.

Lowell Police Chief Steve Bukala says authorities were called 8:15 a.m. Thursday after a woman motorist went through a stop sign at the Vista Valley Drive and Bowes Street intersection and crashed her car into the pond at the Stoney Lakeside Park.

Bukala says the driver got out of the vehicle and some nearby workers pulled her out of the water. City officials say the fencing surrounding the dog park, near the Valley Vista and Bowes intersection, was extensively damaged. The dog park will remain closed until repairs are made, the city said.

The driver was experiencing a medical issue at the time of the crash, Bukala said. She was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital, Bukala said.

Bukala says the vehicle is still in the pond because authorities currently don’t have enough divers to retrieve the car. Authorities plan to get the car out of the water in a few days, Bukala said.

Lowell officials say the dog park closure doesn’t affect the public parking lot in the area or the skate park.
