PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A 63-year-old man is facing 25 years to life in prison for child sexual assault and child pornography at a Plainfield Township apartment complex.

Juan Camargo’s trial was slated to begin this week, but he pleaded guilty Monday to three counts of first-degree criminal sexual assault, one count of second-degree criminal sexual assault and producing child pornography.

Camargo lived at Autumn Ridge Apartments off Mayfield Avenue NE near Plainfield Avenue between March and December of 2017, and spent time at the apartment complex’s playground, according to court records.

Authorities launched their investigation in November 2017 when a mother reported that her daughter asked to not see Camargo anymore.

Kent County sheriff’s investigators say Camargo targeted several young girls. He was arrested in December 2017.

Autumn Ridge officials said in a statement that Camargo was staying there “illegally” and they weren’t aware he was visiting the complex.

Camargo has a criminal record dating back to 1972 that includes charges of arson and burglary. Earlier this year, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor sex offense involving a child in a 2017 incident in Oceana County.

Because of the prior charges, Carmago was prosecuted as a repeat offender in this case, meaning he faces at least 25 years in prison when he is sentenced Feb. 13. The maximum punishment Kent County Circuit Court Judge Joseph Rossi could give is life in prison.

Investigators are concerned there may be other victims and encourage parents of any children who had direct contact with Camargo to call the Kent County Sheriff’s Department at 616.970.2263.
