BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A plan to cut down on Kent County waste while creating at least 150 jobs has taken a step forward.

The Right Place Thursday announced its three-year agreement to help the Kent County Department of Public Works plan and develop the Kent County Sustainable Business Park in Byron Township. The economic development group also plans to help groups interested in investing in the park.

The Kent County Sustainable Business Park would be built on 250 acres next to the South Kent Landfill off 100th Street near US-131. The department of public works approved the park’s master plan in October.

The Kent County Department of Public Works estimates 75 percent of the 1 billion pounds of waste it processes each year could be reused, recycled or converted into usable products. The DPW says the park is part of its goal to reduce landfill-bound waste by 90 percent by 2030.

The Right Place says the Sustainable Business Park could create 150 jobs in waste sorting and processing alone.
