GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Rapids Public Schools teacher previously charged with possessing child pornography in Kent County is facing a new set of federal charges.

Philip Gordon Paauwe of Grandville is charged with coercion and enticement, attempted coercion and enticement of a minor, sexual exploitation of a minor, and possessing and receiving child pornography.

A Feb 28 federal indictment unsealed Monday says Paauwe, 32, convinced a 17-year-old girl in Florida to send him sexually explicit images and videos of herself sometime between March 4, 2018 and Dec. 18, 2018.

Paauwe is also facing federal charges for allegedly going onto the internet to try to convince a mother to allow him to have sex with her 13-year-old girl. That mother turned out to be an undercover officer. Kent County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Joel Roon said the undercover officer contacted Paauwe on an app in November 2018, then spent time building the case.

Investigators involved in the undercover bust determined Paauwe was in metro Grand Rapids and ultimately discovered he had child porn. The indictment says authorities found at least five images of child pornography on Paauwe’s iPhone.

Paauwe was arrested Jan. 8 and his electronics were seized.

Roon said Paauwe worked at K.E.C. Oakleigh in northwest Grand Rapids. GRPS’ website says that’s a special education school serving students from kindergarten to eighth grade.

GRPS says it is cooperating with the investigation. Paauwe, who has been with the district for less than a year, remains on unpaid administrative leave.
