SOLON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Ground was broken Sunday morning on a new church that aims to serve a growing Catholic parish in the Cedar Springs area.

St. John Paul II Parish stands on 17 Mile Road west of US-131 in Solon Township. The Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids says the number of families in the parish is expected to nearly double within a year.

The new church will replace the current building, which used to be Pioneer Christian Reformed Church and was bought by the diocese in 2013.

Once the new church is finished in November 2019, the old building will serve as the parish’s chapel and faith formation and outreach center.

The parish is hoping to raise $2 million for the new church; it has already brought in $1.4 million.
